From a flashing E-Gear warning and shifting faults to a rebuilt and calibrated system: a closer look at the work behind returning this Gallardo to the road.
Finding the cause
behind the warning.
This 2004 Gallardo Coupé arrived with a flashing E-Gear warning, shifting difficulties and hydraulic pressure problems. Faults involved gear engagement and selection, the relay and related systems. The car had a particular problem engaging second gear.
Our goal was to understand the system as a whole and restore proper operation through diagnosis, rebuilding and calibration.
Understanding E-Gear symptoms.
Hydraulic pressure, electrical controls and accurate sensor feedback all contribute to gear selection and engagement.
On this Gallardo, the diagnostic concerns included:

Similar symptoms can have different causes. Faults and measurements are the starting point for diagnosis, not a guarantee of the same repair on another vehicle.
Inside the E-Gear system.
GTE removed the E-Gear system and rebuilt the shift actuator and hydraulic power unit. We installed a new sensor that monitors both gear engagement and selection, replaced the aging relay, and reinstalled and calibrated the system.

The rebuild resolved the hydraulic pressure issue, and rebuilding and calibration corrected the second-gear concern. The Gallardo now drives and shifts better than ever.
